    Photos from the Convict Leasing System of post-civil war centered around Alabama. Convict Leasing was another form of slavery in which mostly Black people were charged with false or trivial offenses and forced to labor while in prison. Beatings, sometimes resulting in death, and all around dehumanizing behavior were as similar as during slavery.
